Meet Dr. Cunningham Durham Prosthodontist
Dr. Geoffrey Cunningham was raised in a dental family in the small town of New Martinsville, West Virginia. After earning his BA in Biology at West Virginia University, Dr. Cunningham went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2000. Following a one-year General Practice Residency at West Virginia University Hospitals in 2001, Dr. Cunningham entered private practice in general dentistry here in North Carolina. After five years in private practice, he decided to pursue a specialty degree in Prosthodontics, and in 2009, he received his Master of Science degree and Certificate in Prosthodontics from West Virginia University.
While at West Virginia University, Dr. Cunningham was honored to be asked to remain as an Assistant Professor and eventually achieved the rank of Assistant Director of the Graduate Prosthodontics Program. While on faculty, he maintained a robust faculty practice focusing on reconstructive multidisciplinary cases that involved Implant, fixed, and removable prosthodontics.
In 2015, after working as an Associate in Durham Prosthodontics for three years, Dr. Cunningham decided to make his dream of owning a prosthodontics private practice a reality when he purchased Durham Prosthodontics.
Also, during 2015, Dr. Cunningham joined an elite club by achieving Diplomate status with the American Board of Prosthodontics. The board certification process was a series of 4 exams, three of which involve defending completed cases to a group of leaders in the field. This process took a total of 4 years to complete. This makes him approximately one of 1,200 board-certified prosthodontists in the world.
In 2018, Dr. Cunningham was honored to receive the Private Practice Award by the American College of Prosthodontics. This highly prestigious award is given out to only four Prosthodontists in the country annually.
Dr. Cunningham lectures nationally and is published in multiple peer reviewed journals. He presently holds an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. Dr. Cunningham is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, and holds leadership roles in multiple local dental study clubs. He is Past-President of the Durham Orange Dental Society and is Past-President of the Southwest Durham Rotary. He is extremely proud to be named as Durham Magazine’s Top Dentist by his peers, year after year.
Dr. Cunningham is married to Karen Cunningham, who currently works as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Durham Prosthodontics. They have two daughters, Annalee and Audrey. When he isn’t working to improve your smile, Dr. Cunningham enjoys college sports, running, skiing, and spending time with family.
