Oral Cancer Screenings

We are committed to helping you keep your smile in the best possible health. As part of this commitment, we provide oral cancer screenings so we can ensure you receive the care you need. Oral cancer includes cancers affecting the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, pharynx (throat), sinuses, and hard and soft palate. When oral cancer is detected in its early stages, it can often be successfully treated. In most cases, however, oral cancer is not diagnosed until it has progressed into more advanced stages that are much more difficult to treat. Our prosthodontists are skilled in identifying the signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities so we can detect any conditions as soon as possible. Common signs of oral cancer include the following:

  • Unexplained bleeding in the mouth

  • Red, white, or speckled red and white patches in the mouth

  • Lumps, bumps, swellings, or rough spots on the gums, lips, or other areas of the mouth

  • Lasting sores on the neck, face, or mouth that do not heal within two weeks and bleed easily

  • A persistent sore or hoarse throat

  • Unexplained numbness in the mouth or face

  • A change in the way your teeth or dentures fit together

Our team will check for these and other signs of oral cancer during your screening at Durham Prosthodontics.
